McDowell Trails Association 2021-22 Capital Campaign

All funds raised during the campaign will go toward MTA greenway and trail projects.  At present there are several pressing and long-term needs.
  • Bridge Replacement – A bridge on the Joseph McDowell Historical Catawba Greenway was heavily damaged by flooding in October 2021. Without this bridge one cannot walk the greenway from end to end. The MTA will assist the City of Marion in building a replacement bridge.
  • Riverbank Stabilization – The City of Marion has funding and a contractor to stabilize seven areas along the river that are severely eroded. This will protect the greenway and avoid further damage to the riverbank. There will be additional costs beyond the funding from the state and the MTA will contribute as needed to complete the project scheduled to begin in January 2022.
  • Fonta Flora State Trail – The MTA continues to work on new segments of the Fonta Flora State Trail to link the three segments already on the ground in McDowell County. Connecting the Joseph McDowell Greenway with Greenlee Park is a top priority.
